The market has become flooded with various types of patch kits for concrete flooring. How do you know which one is best for your project? Here is a breakdown of each to help you make an informed decision that will produce long-term results.
Cementitious Patch Kits-These kits are designed to act like cement, thus the name. These kits are typically made up of a Portland cement aggregate that you add water to. This will make a patch kit that is fairly thick. Most often applied by a trowel, a screed rake, or in some cases a concrete float tool or board.
Advantages:
- Cost-As you are really just purchasing the aggregate
- Great for deep patches over 6”, or large areas to be filled
- Plenty of working time usually a few hours
- Easy clean-up
Dis-Advantages:
- Not recommended for cracks or patches that are less than 6”
- You provide the water
- Tested strengths-composite and tensile rate very low
Resin-Based Patch Kits-These kits are the only type of patch kit Tuff Industrial Products sells. The patch kits are made up of a resin, usually labeled as Part A, and a curing agent, usually labeled as Part B, and an aggregate. Everything you need to complete your repairs is included in a 5-gallon bucket providing you to mix all three components.
These are typically applied with a trowel, putty, or drywall knife.
Advantages:
- Provides a patch that is 5-10 times harder than cementitious patches
- Easy to mix and Easy to use
- Quicker Return to Service-some patch/repair materials takes only minutes to cure
- Higher abrasion and chemical resistance
- Non-slip can be easily adjusted
- Fiberglass can be easily added to produce repaired areas with unmatched strength
Dis-Advantages
- Not designed for deeper patches
- Shorter working time
