The market has become flooded with various types of patch kits for concrete flooring.  How do you know which one is best for your project?  Here is a breakdown of each to help you make an informed decision that will produce long-term results.

Cementitious Patch Kits-These kits are designed to act like cement, thus the name.  These kits are typically made up of a Portland cement aggregate that you add water to.  This will make a patch kit that is fairly thick.  Most often applied by a trowel, a screed rake, or in some cases a concrete float tool or board.

Advantages:

  • Cost-As you are really just purchasing the aggregate
  • Great for deep patches over 6”, or large areas to be filled
  • Plenty of working time usually a few hours
  • Easy clean-up

Dis-Advantages:

  • Not recommended for cracks or patches that are less than 6”
  • You provide the water
  • Tested strengths-composite and tensile rate very low

Resin-Based Patch Kits-These kits are the only type of patch kit Tuff Industrial Products sells. The patch kits are made up of a resin, usually labeled as Part A, and a curing agent, usually labeled as Part B, and an aggregate.  Everything you need to complete your repairs is included in a 5-gallon bucket providing you to mix all three components.

These are typically applied with a trowel, putty, or drywall knife.

Advantages:

  • Provides a patch that is 5-10 times harder than cementitious patches
  • Easy to mix and Easy to use
  • Quicker Return to Service-some patch/repair materials takes only minutes to cure
  • Higher abrasion and chemical resistance
  • Non-slip can be easily adjusted
  • Fiberglass can be easily added to produce repaired areas with unmatched strength

Dis-Advantages

  • Not designed for deeper patches
  • Shorter working time
